Human Powered Vehicles: international insights

WHO:
Shreya Gadepalli is a Designer and Technical Director with Institute for Transportation & Development Policy based in India. She is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, and has been leading designer on the India cycle rickshaw improvement project. Because the improved design rickshaws are easier to pedal and more attractive to customers, rickshaw pullers - often the poorest of the poor - are able to increase their incomes. In just three years, the number of these cycle rickshaws on Indian streets has reached over 100,000. A similar improvement project is underway in Indonesia on the becak rickshaw.

Matteo Martignoni is a bicycle industry consultant and Vice President of the International Human Powered Vehicle Association based in New York. He is a board-member of the non-government organisation Institute for Transportation & Development Policy, and works with Shreya Gadepalli on transport development projects in India and Indonesia. His extensive human-powered vehicle experience includes building aerodynamic land-speed record vehicles and amphibious vehicles.
